Tyro’s Talking Tech & Business Stage at Fine Food Australia 2025 brought together forward-thinking operators, tech innovators and business leaders to share practical insights addressing the real, day-to-day challenges faced by hospitality businesses.
Day One Highlight: Loyalty Reimagined — One Tap to Reward
Day One on the Tyro Talking Tech & Business Stage opened with Loyalty Reimagined: One Tap to Reward, a session focused on how card matching and integrated payments are reshaping loyalty in hospitality.
Speakers highlighted that, on average, only 8% of a venue’s loyalty database identifies themselves at the point of sale — leaving businesses without visibility over the buying behaviour of more than 90% of their engaged loyalty customers.
Impact Data’s Sarah Franklyn explained that the challenge isn’t customer disinterest, but friction within traditional loyalty systems.
“This is a huge, missed opportunity for businesses who could be tailoring offers, experiences and new products to existing repeat customers.”
Traditional loyalty programs often rely on customers actively identifying themselves through cards, apps or logins — a step many customers simply skip.
Franklyn emphasised the importance of starting simple and using existing systems.
“Businesses really need to explore the existing loyalty programme capabilities of their current POS system and existing technology partners.”
This, she noted, is where integrated technology partners play a critical role.
How Tyro’s Card Matching Works in Practice
The session explored how Tyro’s card matching API securely links a customer’s card to their purchases across multiple payment touchpoints, without storing sensitive card or personal information. Purchases can be attributed to a single customer whether they pay via an in-store terminal, QR code or digital app — without needing to scan a loyalty card.
Tyro’s Acting Head of Sales and Industry Growth, Peta Hulin, explained how card matching connects purchases back to the same card, regardless of payment method.
“It doesn’t matter how the customer pays — whether through a digital wallet, physical card or wearable. It’s the same card across different form factors.”
Through partnerships with Shift8, EonX and Redcat, Tyro’s Card Matching API was shown to be seamlessly embedded into loyalty platforms, enabling one-tap payments and rewards.
Australian Venue Co. (AVC) was highlighted as a real-world example, having leveraged card matching technology with EonX and Tyro to enhance customer engagement.
Tangible Results for Operators
Early adopters across the industry reported improvements in customer engagement, data quality, repeat visitation and transaction values. Operators also shared how richer data is helping optimise staffing, menu planning and forecasting busy periods.
The session concluded with a clear takeaway: the future of hospitality loyalty isn’t about better cards or smarter apps. It’s about removing friction and making great service effortless.
The punch card era is over.
Invisible, intelligent loyalty is already here.
