King Island Council
Originally from the UK, Helen Thomas has lived in Australia for the last 14 years, most recently on Tasmania's King Island, a windswept piece of paradise in the path of the Roaring 40s. Working as Growth & Strategy Manager for King Island Council, she is a passionate advocate for her community, and particularly the growers and producers of the Island's many exceptional food and beverage products.
For the last five years, Helen has worked with the King Island Brand Management Group to lobby for changes to provenance protection legislation in Australia, seeking to shift the balance of power from large multinationals who can afford to register and defend trademarks back to the farmers, fishermen and other on-the-ground producers. Helen has previously presented on the potential for an Australian-specific Geographic Indication system for broader food and beverage products at events by the Export Council of Australia and Bond University.
